Addressing Biosecurity Threats and Pandemic Preparedness in a Future with Engineered Diseases and Climate Change (2030–2050)
|
To foster youth leadership and effective rhetoric, DBISMUN 2026 is offering Junior Committees - open exclusively to students from Grades 6-8.
About the Agenda:
Global health security will be dramatically impacted by both innovation in synthetic biology and increase in climate related emergence of disease. Engineered pathogens can be increasingly engineered as technology evolves, potential risks rises for the use of engineered pathogens to create new diseases. This committee examines the issues of biosecurity-related regulation, research autonomy, adaptation to climate change, and equity in relation to vaccines; therefore, it is important to consider how research may impact both national interests and collective security. Delegates in this committee can anticipate some significant geopolitical divides between developed countries favouring stringent regulation of research and developing countries advocating for increased research capacity. Delegates will discuss regulatory mechanisms for the oversight of laboratories that conduct research on engineered pathogens, develop mechanisms for international verification of safety and efficacy of engineered pathogens, establish obligations associated with the transfer and sharing of technology, and develop binding protocols for the conduct of research on engineered pathogens, as well as mechanisms to ensure vaccine equity while also preventing the occurrence of catastrophic accidents involving engineered pathogens. These discussions require a fundamental understanding of both the scientific aspects of engineered pathogens and the diplomatic considerations associated with international cooperation on research related to engineered pathogens.
