Economic and Financial Affairs Council

Deliberating upon the weaponisation of global oil supply chains and its consequent threat to international financial stability

About the Agenda:

The systematic manipulation of oil supply chains has adapted from a geopolitical tool into a threat to the global financial institutions. Important energy-supply nations increasingly use production cuts, embargoes and transport blockades as economic weaponry. Rising from this, the aftermath of the price volatility triggers severe inflationary pressures, currency fluctuations, and capital flight. This committee will explore the vulnerabilities of energy-dependent economies. They shall analyse how energy insecurity destabilises international banking systems, sovereign debt management, and global trade flows. Debates will most likely fracture along clear geopolitical lines. Energy-exporting blocs will defend their right to arrange resource liquidation as well as market pricing. On the other hand, major consumer nations and developing economies shall demand protection against artificial supply crunches and predatory pricing. Delegates must work through these conflicting priorities to deliberate on practical financial frameworks. Primary focus shall be placed on developing robust crises-response mechanisms and de-risking trade routes. Further, attention shall be placed upon diversifying reverse currencies and finally, putting in place international safeguards to decouple financial systems from energy shocks. The committee will demand a technical, rigorous, macroeconomically centered debate. Delegates must utilise deep strategic foresight, looking beyond superficial political rhetoric. They must balance national economic sovereignty against the collective necessity of global financial resilience.
